Speaking to the press, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government is considering measures to protect Canadians' online safety.
"This is probably the first step, maybe the only measure that we need to take," Reuters quoted the leader as referring to the government agencies' decision to ban TikTok on devices .
While Ottawa implements the ban, companies and individuals in Canada will consider the security of their own data and perhaps make appropriate choices, Trudeau said.
Finance Canada, which manages the spending and operations of the Canadian government, announced the ban officially took effect on February 28 and government employees are prohibited from downloading the application to their devices in the future.
Mona Fortier, head of the Financial Authority, said that TikTok 's data collection methods provide significant access to content on the phone.
While using TikTok poses a clear risk, at this point Canada has no evidence that government information is stolen through the app.
Also on February 27, the White House set a 30-day deadline for government agencies to ensure that they no longer install TikTok on federal devices and systems, according to Reuters.
On February 28, the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee held a vote on a bill that would empower President Joe Biden to ban TikTok on all US devices.
"My bill empowers Washington to implement a ban on TikTok or any software application that threatens US national security," said Committee Chairman Mike McCaul.
